This shot shows the St.Vincent's Hill neighborhood in the foreground and the southern end of the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the background. Mare Island, which closed in 1996, was founded in 1854 and was the first facility of its kind on the West Coast. We have some shots available from our current location as well as our old Benicia vantage point, including a distant view of the Golden Gate Bridge, a shot taken during a fall 2001 thunderstorm, and a shot of Vallejo taken at sunrise, in the Words & Graphics Cam Gallery. You may also want to check out this time-lapse movie of Vallejo with some nice cloud movement and a ferry arrival. (It's a 1.1 megabyte file and requires the Quicktime plug-in.)

The technology: We've upgraded our system recently. We're using an AirLink 101 networked web cam to capture an image every minute and upload it to our server.

From 1997 to 2006 the Vallejo Cam ran off a Macintosh IIfx with a Radius Video Vision card to capture the video from a Sony TR65 camcorder. The camcorder died, though, necessitating the change in hardware.

The Vallejo Cam has been online, mostly, since October, 1997.
